I'm Home!

I'm HOME! Exhausted and tired and hungry for some chocolate chip cookies (which were sitting on the kitchen table, freshly baked by my wonderful sister Katherine). I can't even begin to tell you about the harrowing ride home, since I barely remember much. I know that we had to wake up at 6am, and I didn't go to bed the night before until about four (a gift of Captain Morgan's showed up in Jessica and Maria's room at about 1, and we couldn't turn that down). Our luggage - including my three pieces - was on the truck and we were on our way to the airport by 7 am. Ugh. We started in the Singapore airport, with about 50 people waiting in line. Whenever we travel, it is just about the most horrible time it could possibly be. Even though we've done it again and again, and you'd think that we'd have learned some way to make it go a bit faster, this is not the case. We all spent at least an hour in line waiting, and after everyone had checked in we realized that some people weren't even checked in all the way home. They would have to get their bags halfway through, and take them to the main counters and re-check in. What a nightmare! Luckily this didn't happen to me, but it was still quite an ordeal.

First we flew from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I think this flight was less than two hours, but it was not fun. I think I've completely blocked it out, because I can't even remember what the plane looked like. In KL we had a four hour layover. I spent some of it at a cafe, reading and drinking a strawberry breakfast smoothie. I shopped, but didn't buy anything, and a bunch of us had a farewell lunch a Sbarro. Four hours later we were one our flight to Taipei. This flight was less than five hours long, and when we landed we had two more hours to wait, before we got back on the same plane. Unfortunately, this was also not a great flight. My seat was comfortable, and on an aisle, but did not work properly. Whenever you would put weight on it, it would lean back, and it would never stay in its upright and "locked" position. Too bad for me that on Malaysia Airlines you had to put your seat up all the times, to eat, to buckle your seatbelt, to land and take off, etc. And somehow the flight attendants did not understand my situation, and would ask me about a BILLION times to put my seat up, even after I explained to them and had them try to put it up. The other problem with the flight was the fact that about half the people on it had TB. There were several families with about ten kids each, and all of them were coughing and puking on the flight. How nice to know that you were locked in with no fresh air, and millions of contaminated kids.

Overall though, our long flight from Taipei to LA wasn't too bad. I watched some movies... Hotel Rwanda and Thanks to Winn Dixie making me sob hysterically, White Noise scaring me, and Ocean's 12 keeping me entertained. I slept occasionally, and stretched so my mom wouldn't be worried that I'd get deep veined thrombosis. All night I ran on some kind of euphoric giddiness that kept me playing with two of the little girls in the cast and not caring that I was smelly and tired. In LA we all said goodbye and went our separate ways. It was a little sad, although mostly with the people I really cared about. However, we were all so tired that by then we were in a daze, and we just hugged and kept on trucking. I had another three hour wait, and then Dana and Friesia and I headed to Cincinnati. On this flight I was in the middle of two high schoolers who were returning from some debating event. They loved Dana and I, and they talked so much that we didn't really get any sleep. I arrived in Cincy at about 6 am, which I believe was 6 pm my time, two days later. Ahhh!

Luckily when I got home, I overlapped with my sister (she's on her way to Kansas to visit her non-boyfriend) so we could exchange presents. I ate a ton of cookies and managed to stay up the whole day... although at ten pm I passed out in front of the TV. I'm so glad to be home! Now I just have to decide what to do with my summer... and the rest of my life! We'll see... Sorry, but I won't be updating this until August, so stop checking until then. Take care, and I'll hopefully talk to you all IN PERSON soon! Love, Beth.
